Who Are the Irish?
About This Novel
The novel tells the story of a sixty-eight-year-old Chinese grandmother who has four generations living under one roof. Her mother still uses Chinese herbal medicine to treat arthritis, and her daughter, who cannot speak Chinese, has already integrated into American society, working as a bank manager and marrying an Irishman, John Shea. The old woman dislikes her son-in-law, but she has a long-lasting love for her mixed-race granddaughter Sophia, who is a Chinese-style old man. But Sophia never feels that the distant and fuzzy past has anything to do with her. The old woman tried to use the trick of "a stick produces a filial son", but was stopped by her son-in-law, but she finally succeeded in passing on Chinese food, clothing and the skill of using chopsticks to her child.
