The author, whose courtesy name is Chaxian, was born in Kuaiji, Zhejiang during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. He lived from the Jiajing to Chongzhen years. His other works also include the legendary "Lu Shou Ji", "Drum Pan Ji", "Ling Jing Ji" and "He Chai Ji". Together with "Jiao Pa Ji", they are called "Five Legends of Washing Red".
