About This Novel
"Mother of a Slave" is one of Rou Shi's classic masterpieces. The author uses the wife bonding system of the old society as a clue, uses sharp language to describe the unfortunate stories of people of the era, and calls on the people to rise up to resist and revolution. This book tells the story that after Chun Bao Niang gave birth to Chun Bao, she was pawned into the scholar's family as a slave to carry on the family line. At the scholar's home, he endured the bullying from the scholar's wife while missing his son Chunbao. When Chun Baoniang gave birth to an heir, Qiubao, for the scholar, she was expelled by the scholar's eldest wife. I can see Chun Bao, but I can't see Qiu Bao. The whole story uses Chun Baoniang's longing for her two children as the conflicting point and her eventual inability to see each other again. It tells the story of Chun Baoniang's tragic fate of being "imprisoned" and criticizes the corruption of the old social system. In addition to "Mother of a Slave", this book also includes Rou Shi's only novel "Death of the Old Era", which was recommended for publication by Lu Xun. It mainly tells the story of Zhu Shengyu, a young intellectual from the bottom who was infected with the "disease of the times" and was unable to find the meaning of life and a personal way out. He eventually committed suicide due to being unable to adjust due to various depressions.
