The novel tells a story about the trade of dead souls. Dead souls are those serfs who are actually dead but are still legally alive because their status has not been cancelled. The protagonist of the novel, Chichikov, is a pretender who loves money as much as his life, a polite liar. He visited and bribed local officials at all levels, and bought dead souls from all kinds of landowners, intending to hand over these serfs who did not really exist to the Supervisory Committee for mortgage, so as to defraud large sums of mortgage money.
