About This Novel

Ye Shengtao is a famous modern writer, educator and publisher, and a pioneer in the creation of modern Chinese children's literature. As an essayist, he became the backbone of prose creation of the Literary Research Association in the early days together with Zhou Zuoren and Zhu Ziqing. Later he became a representative of the enlightened prose. The number of his essays selected by the "Chinese New Literature Series" published in 1935 was second only to Zhou Zuoren, Lu Xun and Zhu Ziqing. Realism is the characteristic of Ye Shengtao's prose. He insisted that literature reflect life and describe the "blood and tears" life of ordinary people. Ye Shengtao's prose has a rigorous structure, dense stitches, no flaw in writing, and no redundant words. It is calm and cheerful, comfortable and valuable, rigorous in style, plain and easy to read, and has a lasting charm. Professor Xia Zhiqing of Columbia University believes that Ye Shengtao "is the one who has best stood the test of time" among new literature writers.
