Digenes Akrit: the Half-blooded King of the Frontier
About This Novel
"Digenes Akrit: Half-Blooded Border King" is an epic poem formed in the middle period of the Byzantine Empire. It clearly reflects the unique reality of internal and external troubles in Byzantine society during the Macedonian dynasty, embodies the ideas of inheriting Greek culture, praising Orthodox Christianity, longing for border peace and stability and harmonious coexistence of different nationalities, and shows the unique heroic style of the Byzantines. This is the first Byzantine epic work translated into Chinese in China. This work was once considered by foreign scholars to be a European epic as famous as "Song of Roland" and "Song of the Nibelungs". There are many studies and versions of this epic abroad, and there are many achievements. However, little is known about it in China, and even some scholars who specialize in foreign literature research, or even medieval literature research, have never seen this book. Therefore, publishing a Chinese translation has the value of filling the gaps. Its publication will play a greater role in the study of Byzantine literature, which has been ignored by Chinese academic circles, and in enriching the overall understanding of European medieval literature.
