This collection takes the Song Dynasty, which ended in 1894, as the modern period of ancient Chinese literature. It focuses on the study of popular novels and also discusses Shanren poets, a weak link in the study of Ming and Qing literature. On the basis of attaching great importance to data research and excavation, the author places relevant literary phenomena and creations in recent times within the framework of the development of Chinese cultural history, explains their connotations, and evaluates their gains and losses.
