About This Novel

It won the 1955 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel and was ranked 13th among the "100 Best Mystery Novels in History" by the American Mystery Association. A classic novel that Haruki Murakami has read over and over again, calling it a "flawless masterpiece." Private detective Marlowe encounters Terry Lennox, a drunk stranger, outside the terrace of a dance club and takes him home. Terry has white hair and scars on half of his face. Despite his downcast appearance, Terry still behaves elegantly. Marlowe and Terry became friends who drank together occasionally. However, early one morning, Terry came to the door, claiming that he was in huge trouble and needed Marlowe's help. Marlowe put Terry on a flight to Mexico and said goodbye to him, but then got into a series of troubles. This is the story of a true exchange of souls, of spontaneous mutual understanding between people, of the beautiful illusions held by humans and the deep disillusionment they inevitably cause.
