It depicts the entire process of the peasant uprising from occurrence, development to failure, profoundly reveals the social roots of the uprising, enthusiastically praises the resistance struggle of the uprising heroes and their social ideals, and also specifically reveals the internal historical reasons for the failure of the uprising. "Water Margin" is one of the earliest chapter novels written in vernacular Chinese in Chinese history.
