About This Novel
On the surface, the novel tells the story of an amateur chess player defeating the world chess champion on a ship from New York to South America. In fact, it tells the story of the torture and destruction of the human soul by Nazi fascism. As a humanist, Zweig used this novel to express his hatred of Nazi fascism. This book also includes several other famous novels by Zweig, such as "Letter from a Strange Woman".
