About This Novel
Julien, the protagonist of "The Red and the Black", was born in a family of small proprietors. He was obsessed with Napoleon's great achievements and wanted to get ahead. Unfortunately, France was in the midst of the Bourbon Restoration at that time, and he had no choice but to join the army and chose the path of the church.
