Collins's method of multiple persons and multiple narrative identities does not have a modern consciousness. It is just a variation of the omniscient and omnipotent narrative method. I guess he found the difficulty of complete description when using the first person, so he invented a new method. Opium in Victorian Fiction. Caricature of chemists, once again.
