Northanger Abbey
About This Novel
Austen began writing the first draft of "Northanger Abbey" in 1798, completed it in 1799, and then shelved it for several years. In 1803, it was revised again and named "Susan". In the spring of that year, the copyright was sold to a London publisher for 10 pounds. However, for unknown reasons, the book has never been published. In 1816, his brother Henry Austen bought back the old manuscript of "Susan" and asked Austen to revise it. At the end of December 1817, "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion" were published together. The story tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a country priest who is obsessed with gothic horror novels, and sometimes treats real life as a virtual world in legendary stories. She was taken to social occasions to see the world, and made friends with the hypocritical Thorpe brothers and sisters. She fell in love at first sight with the upright and handsome rich boy Henry, and was later warmly invited by Henry's father, Admiral Tierney, to visit his home. In the deep and ancient house of Northanger Abbey, Catherine's mind was filled with horrific scenes from horror novels, which led to scenes of ridiculous adventures. Admiral Tierney, who disliked poverty and loved wealth, listened to Thorpe's slander and coldly ordered Catherine to be expelled. But the two young lovers did not give in. After some twists and turns, they finally got married. Like several other Austen novels, "Northanger Abbey" is also a comedy full of humor. The characters are written with flesh and blood, vivid, and the dialogues are vivid and full of personality. Reading it is like hearing her voice and seeing her person. No wonder critics often compare her with Shakespeare.
