About This Novel

"Fable" is Faulkner's painstaking work in his later years. It subverted Faulkner's previous "Yoknapatawpha lineage". While it won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, it also caused huge controversy. The story takes place in Verdun at the end of World War I, and spans a week. A regiment of the French army launched a mutiny and openly disobeyed the order to attack the German army. At the same time, the German soldiers also stopped attacking, and the battlefield that had been noisy for four years temporarily returned to calm. The commanders of the allied forces of France, Britain, and the United States were greatly shocked. They could not tolerate this kind of calm, and ordered the 3,000 soldiers of the regiment to be taken to the Allied headquarters and sentenced to death... As Faulkner said: "If Jesus comes again in 1914-1915, he will be crucified on the cross again." Faulkner used the story of Jesus' crucifixion to express his deep thoughts on human nature and war.
