This book is a general history of China written by the famous American sinologist He Kai and published by Stanford University Press in 1975. It is specially written for general readers who are interested in Chinese history and culture, and vividly shows the long process of Chinese civilization from prehistory to 1850. This book, which covers the entire history of China, is not very large, but the selection of materials is unique and the narrative is precise. It is in line with the characteristics of excellent general history textbooks in American universities. Since its publication, it has been widely adopted by American universities as a basic textbook on Chinese history. The author divides Chinese history into three main periods: the Formative Period, from ancient times to the 3rd century BC; the Early Imperial Era, from the 3rd century BC to the 10th century; and the Late Imperial Era, from the 10th century to the mid-19th century. These three periods in ancient times are analyzed in several chapters, covering respectively general or political history, governance patterns, socioeconomic organization, religious and cultural development, and literary and artistic achievements.
