About This Novel
"Jianshui Ji" is a meditation on classical life, architecture, and craftsmanship; it is also a work by the poet Yu Jian who asks what "poetically dwelling" means. In the winter of 2015, Yu Jian brought Belgian sinologist John Mai to Jianshui. McJohn has been immersed in Chinese culture for decades. He sighed in Jianshui that the China he has been looking for all his life is here. In the late 14th century, the Ming court "moved the surnames from China to Yunnan".
