About This Novel

As a native of Mumbai, Mehta is familiar with this magical city. He depicts the infinite intimacy with Mumbai with rare insights, stunning details and unique perspectives. The story in the book unfolds step by step, and we are able to enter the dark zone and see Muslims and Hindus facing Mumbai's complex political and business system, fighting for who has the upper hand and not hesitate to shed blood. We get to follow the bar dancer as she grows from an abused, underfed child to a young man who has to come to terms with reality. We were also able to open the door to Bollywood and get a glimpse of its colorfulness and strict hierarchy. We also got to know the longing faces who came to Mumbai from the countryside with hopes for a better life, but failed to be treated gently by Mumbai. Frankness, passion, humor and pathos are all intertwined in this book. Open it and you can enter that ancient and timeless world.
