About This Novel
This is Beijing in 1900. As early as the Warring States Period more than 2,000 years ago, this was Jicheng, the capital of Yan State, one of the Seven Heroes. As time goes by, through the Qin, Han, Sui, Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties, it is not only a famous city in the north, but also an important transportation thoroughfare. It was once known as Zhuojun, Youzhou, Fanyang and Yanshan. In 1153, after King Hailing of Jin occupied it, it was renamed Zhongdu. Thus began its history as the center of feudal dynasty rule. In 1276, Kublai Khan captured Zhongdu, thinking that it supported Taihang on the right, the Canghai on the left, caressed the Central Plains in the south, rested on Juyongguan in the north, backed Shuofang, surrounded the land, carried mountains and rivers, and was the place of heaven. So he built a new capital, Dadu, on the northeastern outskirts of Zhongdu. Referring to the old system of Bianluo Zhongdu, it is divided into three layers: outer city, imperial city, and palace city. It is rectangular in shape from north to south. The outer city has a circumference of 60 miles and 11 gates. Its east and west are respectively equivalent to the inner city and east and west old cities of today's Beijing, the south is the Chang'an Street area, and the north city is outside Deshengmen.
