About This Novel
When I was only twelve or thirteen years old, my first teacher, my uncle, made me fall in love with books and pictures. He promised to take me on an adventure, an adventure that was unbearable. He took me to the top of the tower of the old St. Lawrence Church in Rotterdam. We chose a sunny day, and the sexton of the church held a huge key and opened the mysterious door to the top of the tower for us.
