About This Novel

One winter more than fifty years ago, strong winds swept dust and a few middle school graduates to Chunshu Mao on the Loess Plateau. Here, they dug land, opened up wasteland, built terraces, set up rural schools, told the children about "ancient dynasties", and lent clothes to their children to marry their aunts; they learned to fry potatoes, make sour soup, fell in love with drinking shochu, and eating soy noodles; they read Balzac in the rain, and studied physical hypotheses in cave dwellings... These experiences gave them comfort and hope during the suffering years of hunger, cold, and confusion. The kindness and simplicity of the villagers moved the educated youth with different dreams; the educated youth also understood insignificance and eternity in their awe of the plateau. The author uses pure and authentic northern Shaanxi dialect, which not only shows the inseparable emotional connection with the land and water of that place, but also well reproduces the picture of life in northern Shaanxi.
