About This Novel
The plot of "The Romance of the West Chamber" is directly based on "The Romance of the West Chamber" written by Dong Jieyuan of the Jin Dynasty. Wang Shifu's "The Romance of the Western Chamber" is based on "The Romance of the Western Chamber" and made modifications in some key places, thus making up for the defects of the original work. This is mainly reflected in: on the one hand, many unnecessary branches and bloated parts have been deleted to make the structure more complete and the plot more concentrated; on the other hand, and more importantly, it is to make the characters in the play more clearly stick to their respective positions - the old lady strictly supervises her daughter, resolutely opposes the free union of Cui and Zhang, and maintains the innocence and dignity of the "prime minister's family tree". In this way, it not only increases the tension and attraction of the plot, but also makes the theme of the whole play more prominent and the characters more distinct. Coupled with its beautiful and expressive language, this script becomes a model of sophistication.
