About This Novel
This book is a volume in the complete collection of Chekhov's plays. It includes two multi-act plays, "The Forest Man" and "The Fatherless Man", which are representative works of Chekhov's early drama creation. According to research, "The Fatherless Man" was written during Chekhov's university days and is relatively unknown. The script describes the decline of provincial aristocratic estates and depicts the image of a group of intellectuals, represented by the protagonist Platonov, who have nothing to do and spend their days in melancholy. It is the precursor of a series of "superfluous people" characters at the end of the century created in Chekhov's later works. "The Forest Monster" tells a family story centered on a weird-tempered and selfish professor, and successfully created the image of "The Forest Monster", a doctor with unique ideas but not understood by everyone. It is regarded as a "beautiful dramatic novella". The research community recognizes that "The Forest Monster" is the predecessor of "Uncle Vanya" and is an indispensable part of the complete presentation of Chekhov's drama creation.
