About This Novel
"The Good Man from Sichuan" tells the story of two thousand years of hard work for good people in the world, so three gods came to the world to look for good people. They encountered difficulties from the beginning: neither the rich nor the poor were willing to provide them with a place to live, and only the kind-hearted prostitute Shen De took them in. The next day, the three gods gave Shen De more than a thousand silver dollars in the name of paying accommodation fees. In this way, Shen De no longer has to work as a prostitute. He opens a small cigarette shop and provides free food and accommodation to those who seek help. Instead of being rewarded, her kindness made it difficult for the smoke shop to survive. The helpless Shen De had to put on a mask and appear as his cousin Shuida. He opened a cigarette factory to provide employment opportunities. Cruel exploitation and strict management made the factory larger and more prosperous. While people were grateful to Shuida for giving them jobs and bread, they also missed the kind-hearted Shen De very much. Someone suspected that Shuida had murdered his cousin in order to occupy the tobacco shop, and Shuida was reported. In front of the three gods disguised as judges, Shui Da showed Shen De's true form and expressed his difficulties: "I have to be kind to others and treat myself well at the same time, which I can't do." The three gods were also helpless in front of this problem. "Is it to change people, or to change the world?" Brecht set the background of the story in distant China and wrote an allegorical drama.
