"The Sorrows of Young Werther" is Goethe's most important early work. It is an epistolary novel. The author was only twenty-five years old when he wrote it. The novel describes the experiences and feelings of progressive young people about the despicable German society at that time, and expresses the author's resistance to the feudal moral hierarchy and his strong demand for individual liberation: the young Werther fell in love with a girl named Lotte, who was already engaged to someone else. The setback in love made Werther devastated. Later, Werther committed suicide because he was incompatible with feudal society and felt that his future was hopeless. "The Sorrows of Young Werther" came out in 1775. Its publication was considered an epoch-making event in the history of German literature; it shocked the hearts of an entire generation of young people in Germany and even Europe.
