About This Novel

"Shishuoxinyu" is a notebook novel that mainly records the anecdotes of people in the Wei and Jin Dynasties. It was compiled by a group of literati organized by Liu Yiqing, the king of Linchuan of the Liu Song Dynasty in the Southern Dynasty. The original eight volumes of the book are divided into ten volumes with Liu Jun's annotation. The current version is divided into three volumes, divided into thirty-six categories such as virtue, speech, politics, literature, founder, and magnanimity. There are more than a thousand chapters in total. They record the anecdotes of celebrities and nobles from the late Han Dynasty to the Liu Song Dynasty. They are mainly stories about character comments, clear talk, and witty responses. It is an excellent historical material for studying the history, characters, literature, and language of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. For this compilation, the engraved edition of Wang Xianqian's Sixian Lecture Hall in the 17th year of Guangxu was selected as the base. The main editions are the Song edition, the Tang manuscript, and the Shen edition. The editions are also quoted from scholars such as Li Ciming, Li Xiang, Cheng Yanzhen, Yu Jiaxi, and Xu Zhenyan. At the end of the book, there are explanations of personal names and "Index of Personal Names" by Gong Bin for the convenience of readers.
