About This Novel
In the past twenty-eight years when this news was not confirmed, I had been mentally prepared for it, but when I finally saw the dust settle, I felt sad when I faced the luxuriant branches of the hibiscus tree in the corner of the backyard that had been washed green by the winter rain in Northern California. I subconsciously crossed my fingers: Yu Qing died in 2008; in May of that year, a tragic earthquake occurred in Wenchuan, Sichuan, killing more than 200,000 people; and in August of that year, Yu Qing's hometown Beijing held the Olympic Games. Between these important points in time, Yu Qing left quietly and unconsciously, just like the moment she was pushed onto the plane in the heavy snow in the northwest of the United States in the winter of twenty-eight years ago. The world in 2008 has actually broken away from her relationship of 18 years. I lowered my head and read Jin's text message again, and my eyes stopped at the last sentence: "Her mother stayed with her until she left." By that moment, her mother had been by her bedside for eighteen years.
