On the Road
by Jack Kerouac
About This Novel
I met Dean shortly after I separated from my wife. At that time, I was recovering from a serious illness. I don't want to say much about that illness. I can only say that the illness was related to the exhaustion and sadness of the breakup and my feeling of despair. After I met Dean Moriarty, another phase of my life began, what you might call the "on the road" phase. This legendary novel about freedom and the pursuit of authenticity defined a generation. Inspired by the real-life adventures of Kerouac and his best friend Cassady, On the Road tells the story of a pair of friends who travel across the United States multiple times in search of meaning and authentic experience. The book is a mixture of sad innocence, ambition, Kerouac's compassion for humanity, and his jazzy language. "On the Road" reflects the Beats' view of freedom and hope, changing American literature and everyone who picks it up.
