About This Novel
"Many evils in the world come from the violence of the majority against the minority." From a young age, Ruth knew that she was different from others. Her skin is black, and her mother works as a nanny for a white family to support her two sisters in school. Ruth worked hard to get into medical school and became an obstetrics and gynecology nurse in a large hospital. One day, when she was conducting a routine check-up on the newborn, she was told by her boss that she was strictly prohibited from touching the baby. It turns out that the baby's parents believe in white supremacy and strongly urge Ruth (an African American) to stay away from their child. The next day, Ruth went to the hospital to work overtime. In the operating room, she discovered that the baby she had cared for yesterday suddenly had difficulty breathing. The nurse's instinct drove her to immediately prepare for first aid, but she hesitated after a second. She thought of the prohibition, and what stopped her was the long-standing resentment against prejudice and discrimination in her heart.
