About This Novel

In June 2013, the Guardian and the Washington Post successively revealed that the National Security Agency and the FBI had collected massive amounts of user data directly from the databases of nine Internet giants including Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and Microsoft since 2007, triggering an uproar in international public opinion. This was the "Prism Gate" incident that shocked the world. Author Barton Gellman was one of the first three journalists to speak directly to Snowden and received tens of thousands of classified documents from Snowden. Since then, Gelman has embarked on a thrilling journey of investigative reporting. Following the clues provided by Snowden, he peeled off the cocoon, overcame technical obstacles, and went deep into the secret world. He traced the origin and operating mechanism of a series of government surveillance projects such as "Prism", "Starwind" and "Upstream", allowing us to get a glimpse of the huge national surveillance machine. During this period, he was forced to engage in an escalating "espionage war" with unknown opponents. He is regarded by senior government officials as an "accomplice" or "agent" of traitors, and may be raided at any time; he has witnessed the electronic devices in his hands being attacked by hackers, and has to deal with cunning scammers trying to obtain information from time to time. It is even more common to receive malware, phishing emails, etc. Behind these gripping and detailed descriptions, what we see is a rigorous journalist's strong sense of responsibility for holding government power accountable and safeguarding public rights and interests. He is not afraid to expose the abuse of power and moral controversies existing in the U. S. Government's national security work, and arouse public reflection on the limits and principles of the exercise of government power.
