"The Direct Interpretation of the Four Books" is a palace reading book tailor-made for Emperor Wanli by Zhang Juzheng, the imperial advisor of the two dynasties of the Ming Dynasty and the first assistant (prime minister) of Wanli, and the lecturer of the Hanlin Academy. Emperor Wanli was only ten years old when he came to the throne, and his speeches were written in the vernacular of the Ming Dynasty. Zhang Juzheng used the "Four Books" to educate the emperor and wanted Emperor Wanli to be an enlightened monarch like Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty.
