"The Country of Strangers" selects 26 literary reviews written by J. M. Coetzee, the winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize for Literature, between 1986 and 1999. It is the author's first collection of literary reviews. In the first chapter, Coetzee asks the question "What is a classic?" And looks for the answer in the works and views of Eliot, Bach and Herbert. He then conducted in-depth discussions on literary masters of the 18th and 19th centuries such as Defoe, Turgenev, and Dostoevsky, as well as modernist German writers such as Rilke, Kafka, and Musil. At the same time, it also analyzes 20th century literary giants such as Borges, Brodsky, Gordimer, Oz, Rushdie, and Lessing. Coetzee's literary criticism has a more historical feel than other criticisms.
