About This Novel

"Sleepland" is the masterpiece of the novel by Mozambican writer Mia Cotto. In the 1980s, Mozambique was mired in civil war. As survivors of the war, an old man and a boy use a burned-out bus as a shelter. They discover a diary left by a deceased passenger in which he recounts his life story. The boy narrated to the old man, and the stories in the diary were intertwined and integrated with reality. "Sleepland" was written in 1992 and is Mia Cotto's debut novel. He powerfully complained about the deep suffering left by the war, and used highly poetic and vivid language to create a magical atmosphere that is closely connected with reality.
