About This Novel

Duroy, a junior officer of the French colonial army in Algeria, came to Paris and was introduced by a friend to work as an editor at La Vie Française. He relied on his good looks and ability to please women to seduce upper-class women, and used this as a springboard to embark on the road to success. Later, he kidnapped the daughter of the newspaper owner and forced the owner to marry his daughter to him, and he became the editor-in-chief of the newspaper. The end of the novel also hints that he will soon become a senator and cabinet minister, with a bright future ahead of him.
