About This Novel
"Visions of Girard" is Kerouac's semi-autobiographical novel, which shows the tender side of Kerouac that is unknown under the label of "King of the Beats". The book tells the story of the life and death of his brother Gilad, who died young. The reason why it is titled "Illusion" is because the author combines memories and imagination of childhood scenes to portray a saintly and sensitive image of Gilad: Although he suffered great pain caused by illness in his short life, his wisdom and morality always infected the people around him. This image had a huge impact on Kerouac and triggered his deep reflection on the meaning of existence.
