About This Novel
The novel is set in the Upper West Side of New York City in the 1960s. It records the inner monologue of the protagonist, Mr. Sammler, full of thinking and critical power during three days in early spring. It reveals the spiritual degradation and humanitarian crisis of the society at that time through the main line of black pickpockets. The rich and profound thoughts of this 70-year-old man in the article touch on many aspects such as Jewish consciousness, social criticism of the United States in the 1960s, and the ultimate survival of mankind. Sometimes he reflects on history, and sometimes he cuts into reality. The author Bellow is the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the National Book Award three times, and the Pulitzer Prize once. The book won the National Book Award and is one of the 100 best English novels in Random House's "Modern Library".
