About This Novel

As Wilde's only novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is his artistic autobiography and the prelude to his unfortunate fate. Crime, thriller, ambiguous feelings between the male protagonists... Behind this exquisitely conceived and richly imaginative story lies Wilde's insight into art, love and life. Most of Wilde's widely circulated classic quotations come from this book. After "The Picture of Dorian Gray" was published in 1891, it was criticized by the British press as "a poisonous book, full of the stench of moral and spiritual decay." Later, when a homosexual love affair caused Wilde to be involved in a lawsuit, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" was one of the evidence, and he was eventually convicted of "gross indecency" and imprisoned for two years. Today, more than a hundred years later, we are surprised to find that a sentence written by Wilde in the book can be said to be the best annotation of the incident: "What the world calls immoral books actually shows the shame of the world itself." This version of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" was translated by senior Wilde scholar Sun Yixue. The translation is faithful to the original text, beautiful and fluent.

The writing is very delicate. Wilde is indeed a genius in the literary world. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I feel that Wilde is writing about himself. Dorian Gray is actually Douglas. The scene where he meets Dorian Gray in the article is almost exactly the same as the scene where he meets Douglas. Dorian Gray and Douglas are both incredibly handsome men. Wilde and the painter were also famous artists at that time.

Politics reminds me of Orwell, art reminds me of Joyce, and the poetic language keeps people thinking. . . A character who shines like fireworks in English literature and can be watched together with Byron. On the other extreme, it is easy for people to feel that he is a little too self-centered and a little petty man.

From The Happy Prince, The Nightingale and the Rose to The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde's consistent Victorian Gothic beauty and darkness are like a familiar devil bewitching the heart at night and on the pillow. Watching the drama of purity and degradation that is repeatedly performed, while praising eternity, beauty, love and temperance, there must also be those immoral and dangerous destructive desires. Those who are wise are either mentors or snakes. Lord Henry is obviously the latter. What he provides to Dorian Gray is not moral salvation but original sin. Reading the words of this Lord is often accompanied by a light click, which is the sound of the shackles of sleeping humanity being opened.

Don't be brainwashed by others. This young man who is swallowed up by desire can be used as a negative example. The reason why beauty is beauty is because it will pass away

First of all: The background of the times created a wealthy man from the capitalist upper class; therefore, his understanding of life and goodness was deviated, he advocated hedonism in the class circle, and extremely reflected the private values of the bourgeoisie and the concept of the same class. Furthermore: it describes the inner collision between arrogance and truth caused by human nature being fixed on perfection; the former destroys two things of the protagonist: ① love and ② conscience. The latter produces two things: ① escape and ② struggle. Summary: Life is like a perfect portrait, which should be understood with correct thinking. Being too light and too high may destroy something, such as love; being too attached and paying attention will cause distortion and extremes in personality, resulting in continuity errors and leading people astray. (For example: the protagonist appears in promiscuity, takes drugs, etc.) Warning: Life is as perfect as a portrait, but it needs to be in sync with the truth of conscience; making mistakes again and again to cover up the facts will eventually be difficult to redeem; never leave kindness from beginning to end in life, so that you will not go astray. Mutual encouragement!
