Life and Death
by Pi Jiajia
About This Novel
"There is a Beauty in the South" is the first collection of novels by Pi Jiajia, a powerful writer born in the 1980s with a classical temperament. Included in it are the masterpiece novella "Ever Dies Before Life" which has been highly recommended by famous magazines such as "Chinese Writers" and "Novel Monthly", as well as four articles "Heaven on the Other Side", "Colorless Night", "Crime" and "Grandpa's Thoughts". The novel examines the ordinary places in life - urban villages, street girls in alleys, depressed migrant workers... And carefully and emotionally presents the fate of the bottom characters to readers. The title of the book comes from "Zhuangzi" "When you are born, you die, and when you die, you are born. What can be done is not allowed, and what is not done is done." It touches on the most primitive and ancient propositions about life and death through the story of a street girl who goes from a humble "life" to a worthless "death". The famous critic Meng Fanhua spoke highly of it: I think it is necessary to recommend Pi Jiajia's novel. Pi Jiajia's novel has nothing to do with the current writing style of the post-80s generation. She is neither different from the "money slavery" "Little Times", nor is she an "opinion leader" who only dabbles in it. From a genealogical perspective, Pi Jiajia continues the tradition of novels since New Literature. This is a novel tradition that is still considered "orthodox" today. This tradition emphasizes the relationship between writers and life and society, the protection of value and meaning, and the importance of character creation and imagination.
