About This Novel

"American Tragedy" was published in 1925 and is one of the author's masterpieces. The protagonist of this story, Clyde, grew up in a family of non-religious practitioners who first believed in religion but were so poor that they had to rely on religion to make a living. He was forced by his parents since he was a child to show up on the streets to promote the God his parents believed in in order to make a living. However, the poor and humble Clyde had an ambitious American dream. He was obsessed with climbing and indulged in wine, sex and material enjoyment. Clyde made a girl with a lower status than himself pregnant with a child, but he was unwilling to marry her, firstly because she would be a burden to him, and secondly because at this time, a young lady from the upper class happened to fall in love with him, which could help him escape poverty and rise to the top. So Clyde designed to murder the kind and innocent poor girl.

The two immortals and Buddhas have not yet come together, and they only know that they are not peaceful alone in the night. The wind is full of sad songs, and the mud is stained with bad luck. Nine out of ten people are worth looking down upon, and one is useless as a scholar. Don't worry about the poems and turn them into prophecies. The spring birds and autumn insects make their own noises.
