Lao She was born in Beijing and is a famous modern Chinese novelist and playwright. In 1924, he taught at the Oriental College of the University of London and began to write novels. After returning to China, he taught at Qilu University and Qingdao University. After 1949, he served as vice chairman of the Chinese Writers Association and chairman of the Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles. In August 1966, he was persecuted and committed suicide in Taiping Lake, Beijing.
