"The Eve" reflects the "eve" of reform. In the summer of 1853, two aristocratic young men Shubin and Bersenev chatted endlessly on the banks of the Moscow River. They gradually talked about love and how they both secretly fell in love with the Rapunzel girl Yelena. Yelena is a compassionate and idealistic girl. This passionate, upright, self-sacrificing, beautiful Russian girl fell in love with a Bulgarian youth who made it his mission to liberate the motherland. She married him despite her parents' objections. She was determined to die for the liberation of Bulgaria. Although her husband died of illness on their way back to Bulgaria, she stayed true to her faith and set out for Bulgaria alone. Through the story of the heroine's pursuit of love, the novel demonstrates the author's political sensitivity and ability to grasp the essence of the times in social experience. It timely reflects some characteristics of Russian social life in the turning era "on the eve of serfdom reform" and depicts a picture of Russian social life with the spiritual life of young intellectuals as the axis. The works describe the strange and charming scenery, with colors, sounds and fragrances; the characters are good at contrasting; the style is delicate, elegant and unique.
