About This Novel
Eighty miles northwest from the twin castles is "Tian Dexing", also known as Xingshan Fort. Because the first large-scale cooking pot "Tian Dexing" outside the city was built here, people named it after it. Crossing a ridge to the north is Xingjiatun, now called Shuangqing Village. On Qiantang'er Street in Xingjiatun, there is a deep house courtyard with walls made of yellow clay boards. Early in the morning, a man in the courtyard was pacing anxiously with his hands behind his back. This man looked to be about thirty-seven or eighteen years old, five feet forty-five tall, with a square head on his broad shoulders, like a lump of soybean paste; a pair of triangular eyes embedded in his pockmarked face, flashing a cunning and fierce look; a German-made noodle box hung behind his buttocks. This person is Xingshanbao, a famous bully in the northwest of Shuangcheng County. During the Puppet Manchukuo period, he owned more than 400 acres of land and roamed the countryside, preying on the common people, bullying men and dominating women, and was known as "Western Batian".
