About This Novel
The creation of novels in our country has a long history, and novels in the modern sense were produced under the influence of the interaction between Chinese and foreign literature after the May 4th New Literature Movement. "Midnight", as Mao Dun's masterpiece, was the product of such historical conditions. The work was originally created in October 1931 and was completed on December 5, 1932, with a total of nineteen chapters. Some chapters have been published in "Novel Monthly" and "Literary Monthly" respectively. The novel is set in old Shanghai in May and June of 1930, with the national capitalist Wu Sunfu as the center. It describes the conflicts of various characters in Chinese society at that time, the entanglement of various classes, the intersection of various ideological trends, and the collision of various contradictions. For more than half a century, "Midnight" has not only enjoyed a wide range of readers in China, but has also been translated into more than a dozen languages including English, German, Russian, and Japanese, producing extensive international influence.
