The three towns of Wuhan, located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Jianghan Plain, occupies the center of China's territory and were the second largest city in China at that time. From June to October 1938, the Chinese army launched the largest major battle since the Anti-Japanese War in the Wuhan area with the Japanese aggressors. The battlefield unfolded outside Wuhan along the north and south banks of the Yangtze River. The battlefield extended to a vast area in the four provinces of Anhui, Henan, Jiangxi, and Hubei. Hundreds of large and small battles took place for four and a half months. "Defending Wuhan" is a battle with the longest front, the largest scale, the longest duration and a major turning point since the Anti-Japanese War. In preparation for the Wuhan War, the Japanese army successively deployed 9 divisions, 3 brigades and two field heavy artillery brigades, totaling 250,000 people. It also had 120 ships of various types from the Navy's 3rd Fleet and Aviation Corps, and more than 500 aircraft participated in the war, with a total force of nearly 350,000 people.
