About This Novel

"Alice by the Fire" is a novella published in 2023 by Nobel Prize winner Yon Fauser. In an old house by the fjord, an old woman, Signe, was lying on a bench, and her young appearance more than twenty years ago appeared in front of her eyes: she stood by the window, looking at the water, waiting for the return of her husband Asler. It was late November, and on that terrible day he took his boat out to sea and never came back. Memories keep coming back to her, to the days they both lived together, and back further: Signe thinks of previous generations of her family, the bonds of a family, their struggle against unforgiving nature, stretching back five generations, all the way to Asler's great-great-grandmother Alice, who lit a fire on the river bank at night. Because since then, no one has ever come back from the fjord.
