Is the Psychiatrist Here?
by Yan Geling
About This Novel
"Is the Psychologist Here" is the confession of a middle-aged woman. In a euphemistic narrative, it shows the scars and suffering of the country and the love, hate, anger and obsession of the individual. A forty-five-year-old Chinese woman who spoke broken English confided her past to an American psychiatrist. It is full of her thirty-nine-year love for her father's friend "Uncle He", the grudges between her father and Uncle He before and after the Great Famine and the Cultural Revolution, and her romantic entanglement with her professor after she traveled to the United States... But the treatment was not over yet, and the woman had drifted away. This book (originally titled "Human World") is Yan Geling's masterpiece. It won the prestigious Taiwan Times Million Award in the Chinese-speaking region in the late 1990s and the Shanghai Literature Award in 2000. She also became the second female writer to win this honor after Zhu Tianwen, which caused a sensation and made the author a highly regarded female writer in the Chinese-speaking region more than ten years ago. The structure of this book seemed bold at the time, and its subject matter is still fashionable today. This is what classic literary and artistic works have in common - they never go out of style. Taiwanese writer and publisher Zhan Hongzhi commented: "A euphemistic and touching novel like this has an earth-shattering historical background... But the real story is of a little girl... Until she crossed the ocean and came to the United States, until she became a middle-aged woman, this hidden love never faded in her life, and even became the keynote of her character and destiny. Don't rush to regard the novel as history... Like the eighty-one catastrophes in "Journey to the West", we see a gentle but strong female story."
