About This Novel

There is a fishing village on Daliang Island in the Bohai Bay called Jiangjunmao. It is not that this fishing village produced any generals, but that the sea near this village is rich in abalone. The native name of abalone is "Jiangjunmao". Abalone has a bulging shell that resembles the hat worn by officials in the Qing Dynasty, so fishermen call it "general hat". This small fishing village got its name from this. Jiangjunmao Village has a history of hundreds of years, and the people here have made a living by fishing for generations. In particular, their village is famous for its abalone. During the Qing Dynasty, the abalone here was a tribute, a delicacy specially given to the emperor. Jiangjunmao Village has gone through dynasty changes. The era of tribute is long gone and it is moving towards the era of reform and opening up. When the country resumed the college entrance examination in 1977, a "scholar" emerged from the small fishing village named Zhang Baoyu. His parents gave him this name in the hope that he would be an official. In fact, Zhang Baoyu was only admitted to a non-prestigious school in Beijing - the University of Fuel Industry.
