Night Flight
About This Novel
The novel tells the story of one night when three postal planes flew from Patagonia, Chile and Paraguay to Buenos Aires, and one of them crashed due to a hurricane. The story unfolds on two lines that appear to be parallel but are actually closely related. The pilot Fabian struggles in the night sky with lightning and thunder, while the flight manager Rivière is anxious in the brightly lit office; there is movement and silence, one dark and one bright, and the images of high contrast light and shadow alternately appear, compact, rhythmic, and thrilling. Mountains, deserts, storms, thunderstorms, these ever-changing natural phenomena are three-dimensional and vivid in the author's writing; and the emotional and concrete words have a strong appeal. Whether in terms of content or narrative technique, "Night Flight" is a masterpiece among novellas.
