About This Novel

After "Idiot" came out, it caused a sensation and praise, but also caused widespread criticism. Many left-wing "progressive" writers and critics have accused Dostoyevsky of his opposition to socialism, accusing him of poisoning the people with the opium of religious spirit, preaching to give up resistance and revolution, and preaching patience and obedience. What they especially cannot tolerate is Dostoevsky's nihilistic and self-contradictory worldview, and his pessimistic stance of having no confidence in human beings. What they need and appreciate are "professional revolutionaries who are unyielding and full of perseverance" like Rakhmetov. Revolutionary leader Lenin's fierce criticism: "The worst imitation of the worst Dostoevsky" liquidated the writer from the ideological standpoint of socialist revolution.

Idiot, I see it from the eyes of the world; kindness, I see it from the truth in my heart.

You have to accept all the hardships before you can come back

Doshi once said that there are two parts of The Brothers Karamazov. What we are seeing now is only the first part, which tells a moment of the youth of the protagonist Alyosha through a murder case of his father. The second part narrates his entire life. Unfortunately, this creative plan was stranded due to the death of the author. This unfinished work also triggered my endless speculation about the fate of the protagonist Alyosha because of its incompleteness. Until I finished reading this novel, I seemed to have found the answer. Although this novel was published earlier than The Brothers Karamazov, as the incarnation of the human spirit and Christian faith in Doshi's mind, the protagonists of the two novels undoubtedly have highly similar personality settings. Even after reading it, I once regarded this book as a continuation of the unfinished work. In this book, Alyosha was named Duke Myshkin and walked through this world. The novel tells the story of Duke Myshkin's journey from Switzerland to Russia and finally back to Switzerland. The Duke was ridiculed as an "idiot" by the people around him because of his saint-like benevolent character and physical defects such as epilepsy. This label seems to have become the best footnote of this journey - the Duke who was cured of his "idiot disease" in a foreign country and returned to his hometown in Switzerland. After experiencing a series of thrilling life crises, his old disease relapsed and returned to Switzerland, becoming a complete "idiot" in the eyes of others. The Duke's return trip seems to coincide with Elder Kazhong's instructions to Alyosha-- "I wish you to practice hard in this world. You still have a long way to go. You have to endure all the hardships before you can come back. There are many things to do... You will see great suffering and realize happiness in suffering. This is my message to you: Find happiness in suffering." This idiot Duke has come and gone. I wonder if he found happiness in this misery.

She doesn't like Aglia, who is willful and arrogant. She doesn't fully appreciate the Duke, and she always feels like teasing him. Instead, she subconsciously looks at the Duke from a common person's perspective, despises the Duke's ignorance of the world, and thinks he is a bit of an idiot.

The inner complexities and contradictions of the characters are well portrayed. The Duke has a pure heart and a philanthropic heart.
