About This Novel

"Afraid of Flying" is a semi-autobiographical novel written by American Jewish writer Erica Yong in 1973. It has sold more than 37 million copies worldwide and was called "an unforgettable book of desire" by the New York Times. 29-Year-old Isadora suffers from a severe phobia of flying and is a frequent visitor to the psychoanalyst's couch. Her married life is like a routine day after day, and she longs for new encounters, that "juicy, delicious, devilish" experience. During a trip to Vienna, she was finally able to escape by car and practice her ideal existential life - until she discovered that the so-called "freedom" was just jumping from one trap to another. This book includes a new preface to the 50th anniversary edition written by the author's daughter Molly Jung-Fast. In the conversation between mother and daughter, the fate of "Afraid of Flying" spanning fifty years is hidden: its history is the history of feminist culture, and it is also the history of the entanglement and repetition of women's situations.
