Lin Shen and Yan Ran were forced to get married by their families, and they agreed to stay together for one year and get married after that period. After she went to teach in the northwest, Lin Shen, Yu Yi and Li Xun rented a house on the edge of the city, opposite a coal plant. The conditions there are difficult, but many ambitious people live there: He Ping, a writer full of great ideas, Zheng Zhi, a martial artist with a disabled leg, Zheng Zhi, a martial artist whose main job is making movies and whose side job is an extra, and Oolong Tea, an unrealistic inventor. Many interesting and touching things happened between young people with different personalities. They were proactive and found spiritual paradise amidst hardships. There is a sea at the bottom of the river, and they find the true meaning of freedom and ideals in happiness and pain.
